The Feral and Abandoned Cat Society is celebrating the success of its trap-neuter-return program’s fifth anniversary on Sunday, at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre.

“This is an amazing accomplishment by a highly committed and compassionate team of volunteers,” said society president Carmen Dunn.

“It has been so gratifying to see progress through our statistics and to hear positive feedback from people in neighbourhoods where the roaming cat population has been stabilized and reduced.”

The program was first established in 2012 to help address outdoor cat overpopulation in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and educate the public on the importance of spaying or neutering pets.

Since then, the charitable organization has helped almost 5,400 feral, stray and abandoned cats receive veterinary care.

Through trap-neuterreturn, cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, surgically ear-tipped to indicate they have been fixed, and then returned to their original location or colony.

“Many of the cats we encounter are fearful of humans and not suitable for adoption. After they are fixed, as long as they have a caretaker to provide food, water and shelter, they can have a decent life outdoors,” said Dunn.

To celebrate the program’s fifth year anniversary, the society is hosting an open house event on Sunday.

The public is invited to stop by for cake, snacks and beverages from 1-4 p.m. in the upstairs community room at Membertou Sport & Wellness Centre.

The society, to help further its cause, will accept cat food donations.
