Remembrance Day is a day to honour and pay respect to veterans who gave their lives fighting for the freedom of our country.

Remembrance Day services will be held across the country on Saturday, including in the communities of Baddeck, Florence, North Sydney and Sydney Mines.

Carl Wall, president of the Armstrong Memorial Royal Canadian Legion in North Sydney, said it’s important to remember what all veterans have done for Canada.

“Our branch is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year and we’ve had a Remembrance Day service every year now for 90 years,” he said. “It’s the time of year that people realize what sacrifices were given by the veterans, and without those sacrifices we wouldn’t be in the country that we’re in today.”

In North Sydney, a service will be held at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church at 11 a.m., followed by the placing of wreaths at the cenotaph at 12:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, in Baddeck, a service will take place at St. Michael’s Church at 10 a.m., followed by a service at the cenotaph at 11 a.m. A military display will be part of the service. There will be entertainment by Darryl Keigan at the legion in the afternoon.

In Sydney Mines, a service is

scheduled for the cenotaph on Main Street. A light lunch will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 8 following the service, with live entertainment by Bobby MacDonald from 2-6 p.m., followed by Pepper and Pearl from 6 p.m.-2 a.m.

As for Florence, a Remembrance Day service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion at 11 a.m. Following the event, there will be entertainment

by DJ Paul Power upstairs, while Circle of Friends will perform downstairs, beginning at 7 p.m.

“The wars were so long ago now that we’re losing our veterans and it’s increasing every year,” said Wall. “It would be nice if people would show up to those ceremonies to show their appreciation to these older veterans and even our younger veterans from Afghanistan.”
