Phased In competing for $25,000 investment

-

A Cape Breton startup is one of 15 selected to pitch for one of five $25,000 investments from Volta Cohort, a microfund cofounded by Volta Labs, BDC Capital and Innovacorp.

As many as five investments will be awarded at the Volta Cohort Pitch Event on Tuesday at the Discovery Centre in Halifax.

The Cape Breton entry, Phased In, allows mobile device users to experience a shared augmented reality. Users will see the same virtual objects overlaid on to the real world and detect one another in the augmented reality. Initially, this technology will be delivered through a mobile gaming experience.

Phased In is the brainchild of Eric Lortie, Alban Gray, Dan Hooper and Allyson White of Sydney.

The companies pitching were selected from a pool of 45 online applicants from across the Atlantic provinces.

The selected entrepreneurs will pitch their businesses to a panel of industry expert judges.

Up to five companies will be selected at the end of the event to receive an investment and join the Volta Cohort program, which also provides mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs and resources to grow their businesses.

“This program is about identifying high potential founders and provide them $25,000 along with an intensive program that gives them the opportunity to demonstrate some meaningful success,” Jesse Rodgers, chief executive officer of Volta Labs, said in a release.

“The 15 companies selected to pitch represent a snapshot of what is being created in Atlantic Canada, which is really exciting given the level of innovation and potential we saw in the application process.”

Entrepreneur and digital marketing strategist, Ross Simmonds, will act as host and deliver the keynote address.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and concludes at 9 p.m. with the investments being awarded.
