A recent lunch was all about friendship and giving.

Twenty-four New Waterford women gathered for lunch and brought food items for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

“The camaraderie and friendship is still very important to people as well as helping to collect food for the food bank,” said Marie Martin, who now lives in Grand Mira South.

Last year Martin and Noel White learned that the New Waterford Society of St. Vincent de Paul was in need of food items and they decided they wanted to help.

They made a lunch date, invited two friends and those two friends called two friends and it went on from there. The women were asked to bring a donation for the food bank. “Being generous Cape Bretoners, they all brought more than one.”

Martin said they ended up with 22 people and a substantial donation.

The group recently had its second annual luncheon at Simeon’s in Sydney and 24 women attended.

Now the group hopes the public will bolster their donation.

Martin said Joan Chiasson-MacDonald, owner of New Waterford Physiotherapy and Therapeutic Laser Clinic on King Street in New Waterford, is collecting non-perishable food items to add to the donation. Items can be dropped off Monday to Friday from 8-11 a.m. until Dec. 15.
