Superport Marine Services was the top winner when awards were handed out at the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce Fall Awards Dinner Wednesday.

The event took place at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

Les MacIntyre and Sue Phelan of Superport Marine Services accepted the excellence in business award.

MacIntyre and Phelan built the company from a small operation to one that now employs more than 100 people. Their projects stretch across the continent from the furthest eastern point off Newfoundland to the fjords of British Columbia to north of the Arctic Circle off Greenland.

The Rising Star New Business Award was presented to B&E General Store in St. Peter’s and Learn North Inc., located in Port Hawkesbury, received the export achievement award.

Francis Covin of DSM Nutritional Products took home the safety champion award. The outstanding customer service award went to Margie Beaton from the Gaelic College.

Several businesses were honoured for being in operation for 25 years or more. The Club 25 honourees included The Farmer’s Daughter, Ross Screen Print and Glad Tidings Christmas Shoppe.

Daniel Ross was named the winner of the Strait Area Ambassador Award.

Ross, a longtime Strait Area Chamber of Commerce member and supporter, was recognized for his work bringing motorcyclists from across the globe to experience the Cabot Trail. His work was recently profiled in a video to recognize 100 years of Harley Davidson in Canada.

“It was an incredible evening,” Amanda Mombourquette, executive director of the Strait chamber, said in a release. “Entrepreneurship, hard work and innovation are very strong in the Strait area, which is evident from the award winners.”

The awards gala was held in conjunction with Global Entrepreneurship Week — the world’s largest celebration of job creators, innovators and business owners who turn dreams into economic growth.
