Library card opens up the world for free.

Six reasons why you should have a library card

From my earliest memory, I have had a library card.

It has always been one of the most important cards in my wallet. The wealth of resources I can get with that card with no charge is remarkable.

If you don’t have a library card and haven’t been inside a public library in a while, you might be surprised to see how vibrant and active they are. Public libraries are true community and cultural hubs. Here are six reasons why you should get a library card.

Library cards are free. Cape Breton Regional Library cards are free to all residents of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Victoria County. The great thing about having a free library card is that it also allows you to get lots of free stuff. Yes, the library has books, but it also loans DVDs and Blu-Rays, magazines, graphic novels, audiobooks, and ebooks. If you like movies instead of books, the library has a large selection of movies, including new releases and TV series that you can borrow to binge watch. The library also lends sports equipment like tennis racquets and snowshoes. These are all free with you library card.

You get access to librarians. Librarians are the original search engine. Librarians are experts at finding information that fits your needs. They support lifelong learners and literacy initiatives in our community. Librarians are always happy to recommend a book, help with research, or assist with community events.

You can use library services without ever stepping inside your library (but we hope you do!). Cape Breton Regional Library is open 24/7 with digital content that you can access on your phone or tablet anywhere, anytime. The library has almost 18,000 eBooks and e-audiobooks available for you to download. Whether you’re waiting at your doctor’s office or getting ready for a trip, you can download a book, then and there.

Free events and classes are available. The 12 library branches of the Cape Breton Regional Library are very busy. There are many regular programs such as Babies & Books, Toddler Time, Saturday Storytimes, and Seniors Book Clubs that are available to the public. Libraries also offer many special events, such as Celtic Colours, author readings, and much more. Community groups also take advantage of using the library’s meeting rooms. And it’s all free! Check out upcoming events at cbrl.ca.

WiFi, scanners and printing can be used. If you’re looking for a place to go that provides free WiFi, check out your library. You can also make use of free scanners, and printing is available for a nominal fee.

Getting a library card helps your library. Public libraries are non-profit organizations, which are funded through Provincial and Municipal funding and charitable donations. When funders review the libraries they support, numbers matter because they are a way to show how busy libraries are. In making funding decisions, the number of people that come through the door, books and other items checked out, and the number of people from our community who have library cards matters. So, you can make a difference in your community by getting a library card.

Library cards are easy to get. You can drop by one of CBRL’s 12 branch libraries or two bookmobiles, or apply for a card online and it will be mailed to your home. Go to cbrl.ca/services/ library-card-application/. Go ahead. Get a card for everyone in your family. You won’t regret it!
