Taking the prep out of healthy eating

Local athletes praise Sydney restaurant’s meals to go

A new healthy eating service is taking the time out of meal prep by doing it for you.

Meals to Go Go is the latest endeavor from Scott Morrison, owner of the Flavor restaurants. Operating out of the downtown Sydney location, the service launched on Nov. 6 and is averaging 100 of the take-home meals per day.

“The whole concept started around fast, quick, healthy food for people who were either wanting to eat healthy… or people who want to get around doing their own meal prep,” said Morrison.

“We had to get an extra person to answer the phone, just to answer questions about it. A server couldn’t deal with that and take care of their tables … it’s crazy that’s it’s only been two weeks. It seems longer.”

Meal to Go Go items are pre-portioned, pre-cooked and fall into two categories — the meal-combo and the meal bowl.

Combos cost $7.49 before tax. They include five-ounce portions of protein, starch and vegetable, which customers choose from a few options. These have no seasoning or flavouring so they can fit different diets like keto or low fat.

The bowls are pre-seasoned and come in two flavours — Southwest burrito and Greek. Customers pick their protein and there’s a vegan option available. Sauces are available for both options and cost $2.25 extra.

Chef Seung Hyun Park, originally from South Korea, preps all the Meals to Go Go items, which are cooked fresh daily.

“It’s busy but everything’s good. People love it. The meals are especially good for gym people,” he said.

The service has already picked up steam with athletes, including local professional boxer, Ryan Rozicki.

“It’s pretty much the way I would eat anyway. Super clean, super healthy, really good fuel for what I am doing,” he said.

“I think they’re awesome. I couldn’t cook that well.”

Rozicki, who is eating between four to five meals a day while preparing for his bout on Nov. 25 at Centre 200, estimates he is saving between an hour to two hours a day in meal preparation time through the service.

“What the meals are giving me, you can’t beat it, clean-eating wise. Even the sauces aren’t full of sugars that will make you gain weight.”

Chris White, a professional body builder, is another athlete who is a regular Flavor Meals to Go Go customer. While training, White will eat up to seven meals a day.

“He told me he would normally spent six hours, three times a week, prepping his meals,” said Morrison.

“So (that’s) 18-hours (and) now… he spends a bit of money, but it’s cheaper for him when he goes to us, if he considers the time he saves. He can now train or train people or work.”

Ascendo Fitness is also buying the meals and selling them out of its location.

“The only negative impact so far is it’s been so busy downtown, it’s been hard on the staff. Even though we hired an extra counter person and an extra person in the kitchen to do it, the door is continuously open,” Morrison said.

Flavor Meals to Go Go can be ordered online at cbflavor.com/flavortogo, by email at togo@cbflavor.com or by phone at 902-562-6611. People can also go to the Pitt Street, Sydney, location and order over the counter, subject to availability.
