Academy wins Wildcat Invitation­al

Hosts romp to 27-point win over Memorial in championsh­ip game

Jason Callaghan threw down a game-high 31 points to lead host Sydney Academy to victory in the final game of the Cape Breton Credit Union Wildcats Invitation­al boys’ basketball tournament.

Callaghan and his teammates defeated the Memorial Marauders 86-59 to claim the championsh­ip of the six-team competitio­n that also featured squads from New Waterford’s Breton Education Centre Bears, Antigonish’s Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals, Port Hawkesbury’s SAERC Saints and the Cabot Trailblaze­rs of Neil’s Harbour.

The championsh­ip game also saw the Academy’s Dante Giovannett­i score 17 points, while Jaiden Davis had 10 and Dre Toney chipped in with nine points.

Austin Sullivan netted 18 points to lead the Marauders, while Dylan Quirk and Mitchell Davis each contribute­d 15.

In the first semifinal, Memorial defeated SAERC 87-66 as Davis scored a game-high 34 points for the Marauders. Breton MacNeil was the Saints high scorer with 18 points.

The second semifinal saw the host Wildcats claw their way to a 76-60 win over the BEC Bears.

Jason Callaghan led the Academy with 16 points, while Giovannett­i added 13 points. Dylan MacKinnon, Michael Clarke and Dre Toney each netted nine points. Mitchell Rutledge scored 16 points for the Bears, while Jason Murphy threw in 13 points.

Cabot High captured the fifth place game with a 68-66 win over Dr. JH Gillis. Sam Scott scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Trailblaze­rs, while Jack Pittman scored 23 points and Nicholas Dayman had 21 points for the Royals.
