Riverview art club holds pop-up art show in Sydney.

Gee Stewart has been a big fan of comic books all her life, something that inspired her to become an artist.

“I started making my own work and my own kind of comics, which I enjoy doing,” said Stewart, president of the Riverview Rural High School art club. “My family is full of artists as well, so that really helps too.”

The Riverview club held a pop-up art show titled Respect the Unexpected on Saturday afternoon at the New Dawn Centre for Innovation in Sydney.

The show feature more than 25 pieces of artwork created by members of the club.

“As an artist I find there’s not a lot of representation from teenage artists — there’s a lot of stuff for younger kids and adults, but not really the middle ground,” said Stewart, a Grade 11 student. “I wanted to have this event

because there are a lot of really talented artists in the club.”

Stewart, who had six pieces in the show, said the event offered an opportunity for friends and family to appreciate the club’s work.

“The only time the art is really shown is at school for the students and for parents at parent-teacher meetings,” she said.

The school’s art club has 20 members this year. In total, nine members offered pieces in Saturday’s show.

Because of a Cape BretonVictoria Regional School Board policy, the artwork at the show was not available for sale.

“If people wanted to buy something, everyone has cards and stuff, they’re more than welcome to contact us after school hours on our own time,” said Stewart.

The art club meets at Riverview Rural High School during lunch hour between 11:40 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. and is open to any student in the school.

“If you’re creative and you just want to have a really nice outlet for it, you’re more than welcome to come and participate,” said Stewart.

Although the club hasn’t held an art show within the school, Stewart hopes to offer another show in the near future for general public viewing.
