Brooks Haven Hall holding public meeting
Executive committee of local recreation society resigning
A community hall that has been hosting events for more than 30 years has an uncertain future.
The Brooks Haven Hall located on the Gabarus Highway in Prime Brook, will host a public meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. to discuss the future of the organization, due to the current executive committee of the Brooks Haven Recreation Association intending to resign.
The committee is hoping the public will find people willing to replace the current committee members, who have all been involved with the hall for decades.
“We’re hoping that someone will step up in the community and volunteer and will keep the hall active as we did for the last 30 years,” said Joyce Keigan, the current president of the committee, who has been with the hall since it opened in 1986.
She added that she and her fellow volunteers want the hall to continue to be a part of their community.
“We don’t want to see the hall going down but we want to see someone younger taking the hall busy as we had.”
Jim McNeil, who is the treasurer and an executive member of the Brooks Haven Recreation Association executive committee, said the meeting is important for the entire community.
“This meeting is important because the hall is a community organization. It doesn’t belong to anybody, but the community. We have to be fair to the community and let them know exactly what’s going on and see if there’s anybody who would like to take it over,” said McNeil, who added that the members of the committee are not sure about the future of the hall.
“We’ve lost a lot of families through going out West, we have had a lot of older volunteers who are either deceased or are not well. We need young people.
“This is a very small community and when we were trying to get volunteers in the past it was quite a chore.”
The public meeting will take place on Tuesday at the Brooks Haven Hall.
