Glace Bay Panthers improve to 3-0 at Panther Classic with win over Kingfisher­s

The Glace Bay Panthers continue to prove they’re the host with the most at this year’s Panther Classic high school hockey tournament.

Seven different goal scorers helped lead the Panthers to a 7-0 win over the Sackville Kingfisher­s in Panther Classic action at the Canada Games Complex, Friday.

The Glace Bay squad opened the scoring at 11:36 of the opening frame with Cameron Yates’ shot finding the twine on the power play, before Brandon Boutilier made the score 2-0 prior to the end of the period.

The Panthers added to their lead in the second period, tallying three more goals from Robbie Harroun, Dylan McDonald and Christian Jackson, on the power play, giving the host team a 5-0 lead heading into the second intermissi­on.

Glace Bay continued the offense in the final stanza with a shorthande­d goal by Colin Rosta, which was followed by a power play goal from James Hayes just minutes later, at 8:02.

Cody Smith stopped all 10 shots he faced in the win. Aiden Ring stopped 34 of 41 shots in the loss.

Other action on Friday saw Cobequid Educationa­l Centre over Auburn 3-1, Sackville over Memorial 4-3, Glace Bay over Hants East 3-0, Riverview over Auburn 4-3, and Memorial over Cobequid Educationa­l Centre 2-0.

The Panther Classic continues today with Auburn playing Hants East at 10 a.m., followed by Glace Bay and Cobequid Educationa­l Centre at noon, and Riverview facing Sackville at 2 p.m.

The semifinals are set for tonight with first place playing fourth place at 6 p.m., and second place battling third place at 8 p.m.

The championsh­ip is set for Sunday at 1 p.m., all games at the Canada Games Complex, Sydney.
