Cape Breton Screaming Eagles drop fourth straight game in Charlottet­own

The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles dropped their fourth straight game, Friday.

The Screaming Eagles were defeated 6-1 by the Charlottet­own Islanders in front of 2,611 fans at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottet­own.

With the loss, Cape Breton’s record falls to 15-15-2-1, while Charlottet­own improves its record to 20-11-1-0.

The Islanders opened the scoring early in the game with Samuel Meisenheim­er beating Cape Breton netminder Kevin Mandolese at 1:06 of the first period.

Cape Breton answered with a power play goal by Phélix Martineau shortly after that, but the Islanders would regain the lead before the opening frame was complete with Hunter Drew netting his fourth goal of the season.

Charlottet­own opened the floodgates in the second period with Meisenheim­er’s second of the game, which was followed by single markers from Thomas Casey and Pascal Aquin, giving the hometown Islanders a 5-1 lead after the second period.

Overager Olivier Desjardins sealed the deal for the Islanders in the third period, firing home his third goal of the season, making the final score 6-1.

The Screaming Eagles were outshot 41-16 by the Islanders in the game. Meanwhile, Cape Breton went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Charlottet­own went 0-for-5.

Matthew Welsh made 15 saves for Charlottet­own. Mandolese stopped 35 of 41 shots for Cape Breton.

The Screaming Eagles will finish the first half of the season tonight when they travel to Halifax to play the Mooseheads. Game time is 7 p.m. at Scotiabank Centre.

Notes: Forward Declan Smith was not in the team’s lineup on Friday after suffering a concussion during Wednesday’s game against the Mooseheads. Screaming Eagles head coach and general manager Marc-André Dumont confirmed, prior to the game, the 19-year-old didn’t make the trip with the team.
