Cold hands, warm heart

Howie Centre teen giving away mittens and hats

Ashleigh Hanna has done it again and her timing couldn’t have been better.

For those in need, the recent bone chilling temperatures have been the ideal time to find free hats, mitts and scarves tucked inside plastic bags and posted on utility poles in various locations across Sydney.

This is the third year the 14-year-old, Grade 9 student has gone about providing winter comfort kits for those in need.

This year she was joined in her efforts by her friends from 29 Sydney Kiwanis Air Cadets.

“We must have put out about 200 bags and we have about another 200 for the rest of winter,” said Hanna’s mother Dodie, when contacted Friday.

She said the kits were placed in and around Loaves and Fishes (a community kitchen in Sydney’s north end), Dorchester Street, Prince Street, Wentworth Park and Charlotte Street.

In a previous interview with the Post, Hanna, of Howie Centre, explained that she foregoes Christmas gifts in order to ensure others are being looked after.

The donations of apparel were made by the family and friends of the cadets and Dodie said the squadron will make sure refills are provided.

The kit was a welcome sight for one Sydney man Friday on Dorchester Street who, after inspecting the contents of the bag, donned a pair of mitts, pinned the remainder of the items back on the pole and walked away with a big smile and warm hands.

“It has been a very good day then” said Dodie, in hearing the story.
