Highlander­s come up short

Cape Breton loses 88-87 to visiting Moncton Magic

The Cape Breton Highlander­s missed a shot in the final seconds to fall 88-87 to the visiting Moncton Magic in front of about 500 National Basketball League of Canada fans at Centre 200, Tuesday.

Antonio Biglow hit a threepoint­er for the Highlander­s with just over a minute to go to tie the game at 87-87. At the other end, Anthony Cox hit one of two free-throw attempts to give Moncton a one-point advantage.

On the final possession of the game, the Highlander­s missed a shot, but forced a jump ball under the Magic hoop with only 5.3 seconds remaining on the clock. The ball was inbounded to Duke Mondy, but his shot rimmed out as the final

buzzer sounded.

Mondy paced the Highlander­s’ offence with 22 points in the low-scoring contest, and completed the triple-double with 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Tydran Beaty followed with 18 points and nine boards. Bruce Massey and Kevin Loiselle came off the bench to score 14 and 13 points respective­ly.

Cape Breton (2-8) suffered their second-straight loss and trailed 43-36 at the half, but outscored Moncton 30-18 in the third quarter for a 66-61 advantage, and led by as many as eight points.

The Magic (6-5) replied in the fourth quarter, however, outscoring the hosts 27-21. Terry Thomas scored a gamehigh 24 points for Moncton, while Jeremy Williams had 21 and Anthony Anderson added 15.

The teams meet again today at 11 a.m. for their special Youth Day game. Students from schools in the Cape BretonVict­oria Regional School Board have been invited to attend. Proceeds from today’s game will support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cape Breton-Whitney Pier Youth Club.

NOTES: The Highlander­s announced Tuesday that the team’s leading scorer, guard Haakim Johnson, has been moved to the inactive list as he pursues an opportunit­y to play in Mexico…guard Jamal Reynolds (fractured finger) is expected to be out four to six weeks.
