The North Sydney Historical Society held its Christmas party on December 7, and close to 40 attended.

The reception was at 6 p.m. and the banquet at 7 p.m.

Special guests were District 2 Councillor Earlene MacMullin, MLA Eddy Orrell, Fire Chief Lloyd MacIntosh and Reverend Richie Robinson. Councillor Earlene MacMullin was guest speaker.

The seniors and pensioners room was well decorated with Christmas designs, and the tables were covered with Christmas tablecloths. Special gifts were put at each place setting.

Building manager Robert Hillman was moderator for the event, and he introduced the program. He called upon Rev. Ritchie Robinson to say grace, and the meal commenced. After the main course, Gordon Sampson read a Christmas story called “Little Joey’s Christmas.”

Then guest speaker MacMullin spoke about her new role as councillor, and told those present what she was doing, and how she was adapting. She went on to say that the Northside is an excellent community to live in, and she’s proud to represent District 2 on the CBRM Council.

She said she grew up in North Sydney. Her father is former fire chief Gerry Lemoine, and her grandmother is Joan Dearing. She praised Minnie Piercey

for being so good to her as president of the Seniors and Pensioners Club.

She praised the society for their efforts in bringing the sinking of the Caribou in 1942 to the public during a day she attended here at the Heritage Museum.

MLA Eddy Orrell said a few words and wished everyone compliments of the season.

The women who served the meal were members of the Seniors and Pensioners Club under the direction of president Minnie Piercey who was a guest for the banquet.

Hillman then announced the winners of the tickets given as door prizes. Several members won gift certificates to Thyme Savour Takeaway Food Shoppe provided by owner Jim MacDonald

who was present, while others received beautiful, large poinsettias.

Also in attendance were Earl and Ann MacPherson from Earl’s Greenhouse who Hillman thanked for all their generosity.

Robert also thanked all members, especially society president, Joe Meaney, for all his hard work. Robert said, “Joe is here every day, and he is always doing something in the museum and around the building. Joe is a hands-on chairman, and great to work with,” said Hillman.

Thanks also went to Janice Stagg Harris for all her hard work in helping organize the evening.

“The Historical Society is hoping for a busy year in 2018,”

said Hillman.

He then wished everybody a Merry Christmas.

Following the enjoyable meal, Hillman thanked Piercey and her club members for their contribution which made the evening a great success.

Society members meet monthly and new members are welcome, but this was a fine occasion for them to see each other at Christmastime.
