Winner of Glace Bay hockey 50-50 draw announced
Mary Holland receives $116,000
The much-anticipated Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association Christmas 50-50 draw was announced on Saturday, with a lucky Cape Bretoner taking home $116,000.
The winner of the draw was Mary Holland, who was in Halifax as the ticket was drawn. Holland was contacted by phone and when told she’d won the draw she responded with “No way,” followed by “Wow.”
The Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association 50-50 draw is extremely popular in Cape Breton, but during the holidays it becomes even more fruitful for the winners.
James Edwards, the president of Glace Bay Minor Hockey, said the amount of money given
to the winner is a result of the hard work the community puts in to support hockey and the children.
Edwards said more than 232,000 were sold in one week for the draw.
“It’s amazing the distribution network we have. It’s all of the parents and players that buy into our draw. The success of our draw is because of the commitment of the entire community,” he said.
Edwards said although Holland won the money for the draw, the real winners are the children and parents who donated their time for the hockey league in Glace Bay.
“The big winners are the kids in the association and the parents — the money that’s raised pays for registration and everything from development to jerseys and equipment and on and on,” said Edwards.
Edwards congratulated Holland and thanked her for helping the league thrive.
“You can just imagine getting a phone call from our office manager saying ‘You just won $116,000. That’s a pretty good call to get — so you can imagine the reaction we get from the winner. Our hope is that they enjoy the money and have the merriest Christmas they can, which I’m sure they will,” said Edwards.
“We just want to thank the entire community for the support given to Glace Bay minor hockey given on a regular basis. This draw has been going on for over 20 years now and it just keeps getting better and better.”
