Nominations sought for Tom Miller Award
SYDNEY — Atlantic Canada’s first black alderman is being remembered as nominations open for the award that bears his name.
The Thomas Miller Human Rights Award is presented annually to an individual from the Cape Breton Regional Municipality who has made a significant contribution to the community with respect to the encouragement, promotion, initiation or development of human rights within the local community.
The late Tom Miller successfully ran for alderman in Sydney’s Ward 5 in 1955 and served until 1972. He left behind a legacy of community involvement and commitment to human rights. He had a particular interest in helping those disadvantaged by discrimination and poverty.
The past three winners of the annual award recipient were Gary Borden (2017), Eddie Parris (2016) and Joe Parris (2015). Nominations for the CBRMpresented award close Monday. For more information visit www.cbrm.ns.ca.
