Island Food Network to host retreat in Baddeck Forks

- BY CAPE BRETON POST STAFF BADDECK FORKS

Cape Breton farmers and aspiring farmers will gather to share knowledge, build connections and celebrate their involvement in Cape Breton’s food community.

The Island Food Network will host a farmer-to-farmer retreat on Saturday at the Baddeck Forks Community Hall. The event is currently at capacity.

The retreat structure will be based on an existing farmerto-farmer model where participants select the topics of discussion and knowledge is built among farmers rather than delivered by an outside expert.

The goal of the event is for farmers to build relationships among food producers through a mix of questions and answers, discussion and informal opportunities to socialize.

“(Farmers) are always so busy from spring until fall,” said Jody Nelson, co-ordinator of the Island Food Network steering committee and owner of LocalMotive Farm in Hunters Mountain.

“We cross paths at the market, but never have a chance to connect. This is the perfect time of year for us to chat and exchange knowledge, as we get ready for another season.”

Chef Bryan Picard will cater a farm-friendly meal for retreat participants. The menu at his restaurant, The Bite House, is inspired by the seasons and the ingredients sourced from independent farmers, foraged or grown in local gardens.

Farmers and inspiring farmers who are interested in participating in the event can be added to a waitlist by emailing islandfoodnetwork@gmaill. com.
