MacDiarmid goes to 5-0 at Scotties

Kristin MacDiarmid ran her record to 5-0 to highlight action at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s curling championsh­ip on Thursday at the Dartmouth Curling Club.

The Halifax Curling Club foursome defeated Colleen Pinkney of Truro 5-3 to remain the lone unbeaten rink. Pinkney falls to 2-3.

Mary-Anne Arsenault of host Dartmouth improved to 4-1 with a 5-3 victory Mayflower’s Jill Brothers. Arsenault, a threetime champion as a skip, put the game away on a hit and roll for one with her last rock. Brothers sits in third spot at 3-2.

Theresa Breen defeated Colleen Jones 9-8 in a battle of Mayflower rinks. Breen took a 6-1 lead after four ends, but gave Jones a glimmer of hope by surrenderi­ng three in the ninth and one in the 10th. Both teams are 2-3.

Julie McEvoy of CFB Halifax improved to 2-3 by beating Isabelle Ladouceur’s Lakeshore junior rink 6-4. Ladouceur is winless through five games.

In the late draw Wednesday, MacDiarmid beat McEvoy 9-4, Brothers topped Breen 9-5, Arsenault dumped Jones 8-4 and Pinkney downed Ladouceur 7-5.

The women complete the round robin with draws at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. today.

At 8 a.m. it is, MacDiarmid vs. Breen, Arsenault vs. Ladouceur, Pinkney vs. Jones and Brothers vs. McEvoy.

The 4 p.m. draw features MacDiarmid vs. Brothers, Jones vs. Ladouceur, Breen vs. McEvoy and Arsenault vs. Pinkney.

In the Deloitte Tankard, also at Dartmouth, Greg Power of the Halifax Curling club picked up his first win by handing Kendall Thompson’s Mayflower rink their first loss.

The Power rink jumped to a 5-1 lead after six ends and held on for a 5-4 victory. Kendall Thompson now sits at 3-1 while Power is 1-3.

Four-time winner Jamie Murphy of the Halifax Curling Club and Chad Stevens of Mayflower are also 3-1.

Murphy only needed six ends to down Mayflower’s Mark Dacey 7-1, while Stevens picked up one in the 10th end to edge Dartmouth’s Stuart Thompson.

Both Dacey and Stuart Thompson are 2-2.

Mayflower’s Mike Flemming picked up seven points in the last four ends to beat clubmate Brent MacDougall 9-8. Both rinks sit at 1-3.

In the men’s late draw Thursday night, it was Stevens vs. Flemming, Dacey vs. Power, Murphy vs. Kendall Thompson and Stuart Thompson vs. MacDougall.

Today the men complete their round robin with draws at noon and 8 p.m.
