Top production opens in Sydney Tuesday
It was named as one of the top 10 plays of 2014 and on Tuesday “Of Mice & Morro & Jasp” will open for a six-day run at the Highland Arts Theatre.
It’s an acclaimed take on John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men.”
Forced to work as carnival clowns, Morro and Jasp dream of owning a farm with rabbits that come to life through props, myriad literary references and help from the audience.
It stars internationally acclaimed clown duo Amy Lee and Heather Marie Annis who will be visiting Cape Breton for the second time.
Their show has toured across Canada with multiple productions in Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton and Winnipeg.
The company has been nominated for three Dora Mavor Moor Awards, winning the 2012 Award for outstanding performance by an ensemble, three Canadian Comedy Awards, a Broadway World Award and more than 10 NOW Magazine Awards. They’ve even produced an award-winning cookbook, “Eat Your Heart Out with Morro and Jasp” which was published by Tightrope Books.
“Of Mice & Morro & Jasp” is the opening production in the 2018 winter/spring season at the Highland Arts Theatre in downtown Sydney and according to artistic director Wesley Colford, “this season is all about women.”
“It’s about showing stories you love from a new perspective, starting with a clown version “Of Mice & Men,” “Twelfth Night” set in a disco nightclub, “The Odyssey” as told by Odysseus’ wife (through Canadian legend Margaret Atwood), and a musical version of Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince.” There’s something for everyone and it’s so empowering.”
Winter/spring season ticket packages are still available, offering tickets for the HAT’s five main productions (including this one) for $75, and memberships to the Highland Arts Theatre Society are on sale for $50.
