We, the family, wish to announce the passing of a dear husband, father, brother and uncle, Kenneth M. Smith, 80, on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the Glace Bay General Hospital after a lengthy illness with dementia. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eugene and Alice (Taylor) Smith. He was a life-long resident of Birch Grove. He was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna (Spencer); daughters, Colleen (Scott), Quispamsis, NB, Kim (George), Glace Bay and Tina at home; brothers, Sheldon (Bernadette) and Jerry, Birch Grove, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predecease­d by brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Doreen Smith, and brotherin-law, Victor Spencer.

He was a retired Devco miner, he worked at No. 26 and Phalen Colliers and Coke Ovens.

He was an honorary member of the Birch Grove Fire Dept. having served Fire Chief for 10 years, very active in all affairs of the dept.

In his younger days he was very involved in sports having played hockey with Police and Fire Dept. and Glace Bay Commercial and Colliery Leagues. He played softball with Birch Grove in the Glace Bay Softball League.

He loved music, enjoyed playing the accordion and piano. When he would start playing the accordion the party really got rolling. He had fond feelings for animals, especially his dogs.

Remains are resting at Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Visitation will take place on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 20 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien with Rev. Marian Lucas-Jefferies officiatin­g. Cremation to follow service with burial at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Black Brook at a later date. A reception will be held at Birch Grove Fire Hall following the service.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or St. Paul’s Church or charity of one’s choice. Family flowers only.
