The Glace Bay Y’s Men’s and Women’s Club is hosting two flea markets to sell off furniture and at the same time giving people an opportunity to raise money.

The flea markets will be held at the former Morrison junior high school Jan. 27-28 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.

The club members originally planned a yard sale but now are providing residents an opportunity to take part.

“We are renting tables for $10 for anyone who wants to bring stuff in and sell it,” said club secretary Jeanette MacDonald.

MacDonald said although some items have already been sold there is still a large amount of furniture for sale.

“There are still lots of desks, chairs, teachers’ desks and much more,” she said. “There’s an abundance of stuff.”

Anyone wishing to rent a table can show up at the former school anytime after 9:30 a.m. on the days of the flea market or contact the club at 902-849-6665 or 902-842-3027.

MacDonald said depending on what is left from the flea markets and community response, they might have more flea markets.

The club purchased the former Morrison school from the International Centre for Academic English. Members want to preserve the century-old building and plan to develop the main floor as a place for programs, activities as well as office and storage rentals.

The club plans to utilize the 16-room second floor for its own activities including laser tag and the seniors program.

Money raised through the sale of the school’s furniture will be used to maintain the building. The club has already invested $10,000 in heating oil for the building.

“There’s an abundance of stuff.”
