Columnist misses the mark regarding Trump

- Anthony MacDonald North Sydney

I am a daily reader of the Cape Breton Post and the Chronicle Herald, and have to say that my two favourite journalists at these newspapers are Jim Vibert and John DeMont.

However, I was completely flummoxed while reading Jim Vibert’s op-ed (“One year later and America’s a fool’s paradise,” Cape Breton Post, Jan. 22) and found myself repeatedly looking up at the byline to reaffirm that he actually wrote it.

Readers know Jim has worked or consulted for five Nova Scotia governments and I, for one, believe he has posited numerous valid and considerate arguments and critiques with regard to the bureaucratic institutions here in Nova Scotia.

But as far as his opinions on politics south of the border are concerned, I’m afraid that he is seriously misinformed.

There is a world of good being done by the Trump administration that far outweighs anything that was done since the Reagan era (1981-89) in the USA. I won’t spend time belaboring this issue, but the economic numbers released recently show that the United States economy is at its best position since 1992 and that President Donald Trump has stimulated the American economy more in his first year of presidency than any other U.S. president, with the exception of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), in their first year of office.

Not bad, considering FDR was elected president on the “new deal” platform in 1933, when the country was still reeling from the 1929 stock market crash.

As for the other great work Trump is performing, perhaps Jim can take some time next Tuesday evening (Jan. 30) to tune in to his State of The Union address. With the impending release of House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes ‘ memo regarding the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. and other political discourse, I bet he will find plenty of real news worthy of his exemplary writing skills and readers attention.

For what it’s worth, I was a vehement opponent of Trump’s campaign to the White House as well. The passage of time, the emergence of information and my “boots on the ground” research have given pause to the fallacy in my thinking,
