We the family, regret to announce the passing of Michael William O’Brien, of Gardiner Mines, on January 21, 2018, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, at the age of 86 years.

Michael was born the elder son of Michael Sr. and Cora (Née: McKinnon) O’Brien on May 31, 1931 in Gardiner Mines, Nova Scotia.

Micky was an air force veteran, and a coal miner, settling his career working in the Number 26 Colliery. An active member in the St. James Parish church in many capacities, Micky was recognized as Eucharisti­c Minister for many years. An avid hockey and baseball fan, in his younger years he would often be found playing on a fastball team with his brother, Bernie. In his later years, he would often be found at Tim Hortons, chatting with friends over his morning coffee. Throughout his life, Micky was a well-liked and respected member of Gardiner Mines and the surroundin­g communitie­s.

Micky is survived by his wife of 10 years, Genevieve; his son, Tony and his wife, Mary, their sons, Michael, Joshua, and Andrew; his son, Shannon and his wife, Diane, and their sons, Christophe­r, Connor, and Liam. He is also survived by his brother, Bernie O’Brien.

Besides his parents, Micky was predecease­d by his first wife, Margaret (Née: Gillis) O’Brien.

Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service in the chapel at T. J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialist­s, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS 902849-4199 on Thursday January 25, 2018, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiatin­g.

Donations can be made to the Lung Associatio­n of Nova Scotia. Burial will be held at a later date.
