Time to get out winter sports gear.

Here we are heading into the last week of January, and now that we have a beautiful white covering to our landscape, I thought I would touch on some great ways to get out and enjoy some fun activities for the whole family this winter.

We are so lucky to live in a county that has a recreation department that offers programs to help families get out and enjoy the winter. The Department of Recreation, Leisure and Community Relations has purchased numerous pairs of snowshoes with poles and cross country skis, boots and poles which they loan free of charge to the residents of Richmond. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.

They have also purchased 13 pairs of skates and 20 helmets to loan out to the public during the free weekly public skate from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. For the snowshoes just stop in at the Richmond County Literacy Network office in St. Peter’s which is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fill out an equipment rental form or stop in at the Eastern Counties Regional Library in Petit de Grat from Monday through to Thursday or on Saturday during their scheduled hours. For the Petit de Grat Library loan out program, you must have an Eastern Counties Regional Library Card.

To reserve the cross county skis you must call Laurier at

902-226-3981 and go to the municipal office to pick up the skis. The skates and helmets can be borrowed at the Richmond Arena in Louisdale. For more information on this great program call Laurier at the recreation department at 902226-3981.

There are skating activities at the Richmond Arena in Louisdale offered by the recreation

department, include parent/ tot skate help on Wednesdays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a cost of $2 a person and $5 per family. From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesdays take in a senior skate at $3 a person or $5 per couple. An after-school skate will be held on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at a cost of $1 per person. These are all great ways for family and friends to have fun this winter.
