BAXENDALE LEADS PANTHERS

The Membertou-based MacIntyre Chevy Panthers earned a win and a tie over the weekend against the top team in the Nova Scotia Female Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League. The Panthers and the Northern Subway Selects played to a 2-2 tie on Saturday before the Cape Breton squad won 4-2 on Sunday. Molly Baxendale led the Panthers with four points over the weekend, while Erin Denny contribute­d three points. Julia Carroll was in goal for both games.

Major Midget

The Cape Breton Unionized Tradesmen picked up a pair of weekend wins over the Pictou County’s Weeks in Membertou. Kinnon Williams scored the game-wining goal in Saturday’s 3-2 win, while Vincent Stevens and Sonny Kabatay also lit the lamp. Seth Crowe was the winning goalie. On Sunday, Sam Gillis scored twice as the Tradesmen overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 5-2. Ashton Paul, Tytan Donovan and Kenzie MacKinnon also scored. Josh Leudy made 25 saves for the win. Meanwhile, the Cape Breton West Islanders dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to Dartmouth’s Steele Subaru Major Midgets. Ewan MacDonald turned aside 36 shots for the Islanders, while Sam Grant scored the team’s only goal.

Minor Midget

The Cape Breton Jets skated into a first-place tie in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League with a pair of wins over the Valley Wildcats in New Waterford. On Saturday, four different players (Nathaniel Fuller, Jason Johnson, Matthew MacIntosh and Adam Wilson) scored in the Jets 4-1 win, while on Sunday, Ryan Chisholm led Cape Breton to a 5-3 win with two goals. Wilson, Alec Campbell and Dante Basque also scored for the Jets. Andre LeClair made 32 and 27 saves in the two games.

Major Bantam

Cape Breton’s Joneljim Cougars dropped a pair of low scoring road games over the weekend. On Saturday, all of the scoring was in the first period as the Cougars fell 2-1 to the Storm in Cole Harbour. Drew Baldwin scored the Cougars’ only goal. On Sunday in Port Hawkesbury, the Cougars forced The Novas to overtime before eventually losing 3-2 in a shootout. Sam Brown and Logan Snow scored for the Cougars (8-18-3-0).
