Festival offers staycation events
Juno-Award winning performers part of Taste of Winter
The Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s recreation department has announced a concert featuring Juno Award-winning performers as part of the March Break Staycation component of its winter festival.
Taste of Winter will take place from March 9-18, with activities such as swimming, curling, bowling, laser tag and more.
Kicking off the week will be a concert from Juno Award winning performers William Prince and Digging Roots at the Sarah Denny Cultural Centre in Eskasoni.
Prince is a storytelling singersongwriter from Peguis First Nation in Manitoba. His baritone vocals pay tribute to his late father and his delivery acknowledges the hundreds of hours he’s spent on stage. Prince won the 2017 Juno for contemporary roots album of the year and he performed at a dozen or more folk festivals all across Canada including the CBC Music Festival.
Digging Roots is a Juno Awardwinning rock and blues group built around husband and wife duo Raven Kanetakta and ShoShona Kish.
The concert will take place March 9 at 6p.m., and admission is free. Taste of Winter has a variety of activities on offer during a March Break Staycation.
Participants can take in a free swim at the Northside Community Pool in North Sydney (March 10 at 2:30 p.m.) or the Kiwanis Pool in Sydney (March 12 at 11 a.m.); learn to curl at the Schooner Curling Club in Sydney (March 15 at 11 a.m.); or bowl a string at the Strand Bowling Lanes in Sydney Mines (March 15 at 1 p.m.).
Outdoors activities include horse-drawn wagon rides at the Carmen Young Track in North Sydney (March 11 at noon) and the John Bernard Croak Dam Trail in Glace Bay (March 18 at noon), or take aim with outdoor laser tag at the Our Lady of Fatima Field in Sydney River (March 11 at 1 p.m.) and Collierylands Park in New Waterford (March 17 at 1 p.m.).
A shopping outing at the Mayflower Mall can coincide with the Youth in Music Songwriters’ Circle (March 13 at 6 p.m.) or Taste of Winter craft day (March 17 at 11 a.m.).
Also on offer is the Taste of Winter movie night (March 15 at 6 p.m.), with The Incredibles hitting the big screen at Centre 200 in Sydney.
“March break is about family fun and our team has built a schedule that allows families to take advantage of things happening right here at home,” recreation program co-ordinator Joe Costello said in a news release. “There’s a lot to do and see, and we hope you find a new location or a new activity on the way.”
