Volunteers liven up nursing home

-

While many community organizations are reporting dwindling volunteer numbers, a Baddeck seniors complex is bucking the trend.

Representatives at Alderwood Baddeck, located in Victoria County, say the long-term care facility receives a boost from its pool of volunteers, including some who have been helping out for more than 30 years.

“Our volunteers are from many areas of Cape Breton including Middle River, Baddeck, Iona, St. Anns Bay, Whycocomagh, North Shore, Sydney Mines, Little Narrows and Margaree,” said Alderwood’s recreation director, Gwynn Shaw.

“We appreciate that they contribute so much to our success and we’re glad to be able to count on them.”

Shaw attributes much of the success of home activities such as birthday parties and special events to the dedication of a large number of volunteers.

Among the facility’s volunteers are the Alderwood working council, Middle River auxiliary, Baddeck auxiliary, along with the area’s schoolchildren, church groups, as well as individuals and nursing home staff.

Several local musicians also provide hours of entertainment for residents and staff alike.

Regular activities at Alderwood include weekly church services, along with the recreational activities of bingo, knitting, card games and pet therapy. Shaw believes volunteering is not only a great way to meet new people, it also helps strengthen community ties. Anyone interested in volunteering at Alderwood can phone 902-295-2644 ext. 226.
