Glace Bay club partners with wedding decorator

The Glace Bay Y’s Men’s and Women’s Club has a wedding decorator.

Patricia Hillis, owner of Thoms Flowers in Glace Bay, has partnered with the club to provide decorating services to anyone who rents the former Morrison school gymnasium for a wedding reception.

“It’s going to be a nice outlet,” said Hillis, who has been a licensed wedding decorator since 2013.

The gymnasium and stage are being painted and the floors buffed, she said, adding the ceiling will have sheers, chandeliers and lights permanently installed.

“That’s going to be a fixture so when people walk in the door of the auditorium to see it they are going to see it decorated. They aren’t going to walk into an empty auditorium. The only thing we would have to change out for them is the colours.”

The Glace Bay club recently purchased the Morrison school building and is offering space for community programs and activities as well as rentals.

“I asked (club members) what they were going to do with the auditorium and we just started talking,” she said. “Now we’re going to give it a try.”

At one time Hillis decorated for weddings all over Cape Breton but since she purchased Thoms Flowers a year ago she limits that side of her business to the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

She said she does a lot of

decorating for wedding receptions at Membertou Trade and Convention Centre but the challenge in Glace Bay and area has been finding a large hall especially since the Bayplex closed for renovations.

When a couple rents the Y’s Men’s gymnasium for a wedding, Hillis said she will be available to look after all of the decorating necessities.

“If they go through us there is also a 20 per cent discount on the wedding flowers.”

Hillis can provide the tables — either round or long — and can decorate the room to specifications. She can also create special themed weddings.

“We have done so many different themes like Disney and we do a lot of rustic with wine barrels, old typewriters, trunks,” she said. “We also do elegant, sparkly and have done some Christmas and New Year’s themes.”

Club secretary Jeanette MacDonald believes the partnership

with Hillis will help with gym rentals for wedding receptions.

“It will make a difference, having an expert who knows all about the colours and doing the tables up. She has this knowledge. We think this will work really well.”
