BROCKLEHUR­ST, Irene Dorothy Brocklehur­st, DCHS

It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful death of Irene Dorothy Brocklehur­st at her home on February 8, 2018. Born in Sydney December 8, 1923, she was the daughter of Allan A. and Annie (McNally) MacDonald.

Dorothy was a graduate of Holy Angels High and the Empire Business college. She was Executive Secretary of the Sydney Cancer Society and was a member of the Board of Governors of the College of Cape Breton. She also served on the Nova Scotia Social Assistance Board. She served as Board Vice President of Cape Breton Mental Associatio­n.

Dorothy was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League well over 60 years serving on the Executive on all levels and was President of her Parish, diocesan and Provincial C.W.L. Dorothy was General Convenor of the National C.W.L. convention held in Sydney, NS in 1972. Dorothy was elected National President of the C.W.L. in 1980 until 1982.

Dorothy was in Brussels and Paris on a study tour of the European Organizati­ons of Canada’s Foreign Policy with seven other leaders of women’s organizati­ons in Canada as a guest of the North Atlantic Treaty Organizati­on in cooperatio­n with External Affairs.

Dorothy was awarded Honorary Citizen for the City of Sydney, February 16, 1991. She was presented with the Maple Leaf Service pin from her Parish Council C.W.L. of St. Joseph’s and a Life Membership Pin from the Nova Scotia Provincial and National Councils of the C.W.L.

Dorothy was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth 11 Silver and Gold Medals. She was also Dame Commander of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She had a lively interest in musicals and drama having performed from her early teens through the war years and into the ‘70’s in local production­s at the Lyceum and Rotary Shows. She was an active choir member of St. Joseph’s Parish for 46 years. Dorothy was a faithful member of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish.

Dorothy was predecease­d by her husband, Walter, and son, Barry; brothers, Elmer, Eddy, Eldred (Buddy), Wilfred, and sister, Jeanette Walsh.

She is survived by her daughter, Audrey; son, Allan, and grandson, Peter; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation for Dorothy will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Monday, February 12 from 2-4 and 7-9. A prayer service will be held by the C.W.L. and will assemble at 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday evening. Funeral Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Fr. Bill Burke presiding. Interment will be held at Resurrecti­on Cemetery in Sydney Forks.
