Mayor receives support after ‘cynical’ letter

-

I am writing in response to the Wendy Wishart’s cynical letter (‘Timing of Clarke’s gay announcement ‘stinks’, Cape Breton Post, Feb. 7) trashing Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Cecil Clarke on the timing of his decision to come out as gay.

She mentioned that he could have come out at the Rainbow Parade or when a magazine did articles about him, but instead, chose this time for extra publicity in his run for mayor.

Really, Wendy? What kind of person would want their personal life exposed like this for publicity, unless of course you were Kim Kardashian? Mayor Clarke is a man of dignity and should have had a choice of never coming out or coming out at a time of his choosing, as it really is nobody’s business.

Instead the mayor explained he had the worst week of his life and was threatened to be outed in his run for premier. To show he would not be intimidated or blackmailed by this low life individual, he beat him at his game by coming out himself on his own terms. I consider this an act of courage.

The fact that Cecil Clarke if viewed by many as a “career politician” does not make this a crime. Some people actually look up to someone who devotes their life to public service.

Hopefully, the one good thing that comes out of this is that Mayor Clarke can be seen with the person he loves and be proud of the person he is. At least he can run for premier based on his credentials and not in fear of blackmail.

All the best, Cecil. Terry Charlene MacKay Sydney
