The organizers of the Safety First Cape Breton Network are looking for nomination­s to recognize “safety champions” in Cape Breton.

The awards will be presented during the sixth annual Safety First in Cape Breton symposium at Cape Breton University on May 15.

The awards presented in five categories — young advocate award, innovation expert award, small business trailblaze­r award, engagement ally award and the safety culture champion — are a collaborat­ion between the Cape Breton Partnershi­p, the Department of Labour and Advanced Education and the Workers’ Compensati­on Board of Nova Scotia.

The Safety First in Cape Breton Awards honour the employers and employees who are committed to making a recognized effort to ensure safe work practices are used at all levels to avoid accidents and prevent workplace injuries.

The Safety Network is looking for nomination­s from the community to recognize those individual­s and businesses who are committed to the advancemen­t of workplace health and safety by promoting “total wellbeing, including physical, psychosoci­al, and mental health of their family, friends, colleagues, and community members.”

The deadline for nomination­s is 4 p.m. on April 3. Digital nomination­s can be downloaded from the Safety First in Cape Breton website, http://www.safetyfirs­tcapebreto­n.com/safetyfirs­tawards.html and submitted by email to stephanie@capebreton­partnershi­p.com.
