It looks like Mother Nature may lend a hand to some family winter fun this weekend.

The Two Rivers Wildlife Park is inviting the public to come out and bond with some outdoor fun all weekend, as well as Nova Scotia Heritage Family Day on Monday.

“Monday is an opportunity for the family to get out and enjoy a holiday together,” said park manager Johnny Huntington.

Nova Scotia Family Day falls on the second Monday of February. This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities.

With Environment Canada forecasting periods of snow for Sunday, Huntington said they have their 75 pairs of snowshoes waiting for hiking along the river and the hills ready for sledding.

“It will be a dandy opportunity for people to get out and enjoy what little winter we had,” he said.

“There will be free wagon rides 1-3 p.m. and the pond is in great shape for skating. We’ll have a bonfire going and there’s a cabin next to the pond with a wood stove going where you can get inside and get warm.”

As well, said Huntington, the petting zoo and the animal trails will be open and canteen services available offering everything from hot chocolate to French fries and much more.

“The animals are always up for visitation and look great this time of year.”

Huntington said the park is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week, so people can come at any time. Where it is a long weekend, the park will also offer free wagon rides Saturday and Sunday from 1-3 p.m. along with all the other park activities of skating, sliding, etc.

However while promoting winter fun Huntington was quick to defend their groundhog, Two Rivers Tunnel, who predicted an early spring on Groundhog Day.

“This is just a little bit of winter before our early spring like he predicted,” Huntington said while adding jokingly in case some don’t like the snow: “We’re keeping him somewhere safe.”
