It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of John David Gillan at the Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodboi­t Harbour, surrounded by family members.

David, 86, born in Sydney Mines, was a loving husband, father, papa and brother. David served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Gander, Chatham, and North Bay before returning to Sydney Mines in 1965 with his growing family after which he began his career with DEVCO until his retirement.

David was a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Presbyteri­an Church, serving as a faithful member of the session, and a happy member of the choir.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth Anne (Macaulay); sons, Stewart (Sarah), Scotland, Gordon (Margaret), GrandBay-Westfield, Tom, Halifax; and daughter, Anne (Rob) Day, Halifax; grandchild­ren, Imogen and Alexander Gillan, Ian Gillan, Robert and Christina Day, and Kamren LeLievre; and his many nieces and nephews. He was predecease­d by his son, Malcolm.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Berkeley Bedford Retirement Home, the QEII hospital, and the Twin Oakes Memorial Hospital for their compassion­ate and attentive care provided to David.

Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, February 18, 2018 at the Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, 8 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines.

The service of thanksgivi­ng for David’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 19 at St. Andrew’s Presbyteri­an Church at the corner of Main and Queen Streets, Sydney Mines.

A private family burial will take place at a later date.
