The Glace Bay revitalization group bayitforward has had events for families, seniors, the business community and now women.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, a luncheon will be held on March 8. The event will begin at noon at Talo Cafebar, Commercial Street, Glace Bay.

“It’s celebrating women entrepreneurs in Glace Bay,” said Mary Pat Mombourquette, a board member of bayitforward and executive director of the Cape Breton Miners’ Museum.

Angela Houston, owner of Talo and treasurer of bayitforward, will be speaking as well as Melissa McDonough-Howley, who along with husband Brian owns Cabot Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy Clinic.

“We’ve got these two young women down there on Commercial Street and they’ve got successful businesses,” Mombourquette said.

“It’s time for us to celebrate the women and others in the community creating wonderful new businesses here in Glace Bay.”

Mombourquette said the idea for the event came from Houston as a way to recognize International Women’s Day and organizers hope to encourage more entrepreneurs.

“We definitely need more entrepreneurship here and we’ve got these successful women who are going to be speaking and letting us know how they did it, what challenges they overcame and what opportunities they found.”

The money raised from the event will go to the bayitforward Glace Bay Community Fund.

This fund is about the sustainability of Glace Bay,” Mombourquette said. “We hope to continue to build the fund so we

can fund other events in Glace Bay. The fund is about working to make a significant difference to Glace Bay.”

Mombourquette said the March 8 event is open to everyone. Tickets are $30 and include lunch and dessert. Seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased from any bayitforward member or at Talo.

Donations can be made to the Glace Bay Community Fund any time and tax receipts are issued.

International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8, is a global event celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The campaign theme this year is #PressforProgress.
