Student enjoys variety of winter activities at Riverview

- Hannah Rudderham

February started off with a bang for Riverview students.

The annual Red Cup tournament celebrated 40 years, kicking off the month. Kathryn MacIssac was one of the many students cheering from a crowd of red and white that weekend.

“My favourite part of Red Cup is just feeling like I’m part of the school community and not just a bystander floating my way through high school. It kind of gives me a sense of belonging,” the Grade 12 student said.

Red Cup was set to begin on February 1 but due to snow days, many exams were pushed forward which also bumped the Red Cup tournament. But, the opening game still had many Riverview students decked out in red and white along with families to enjoy the entertainment.

“I believe without a doubt that Red Cup brings us together as students,” MacIssac said. “I’ve never experienced anything like Red Cup before. It’s complete unity and the epitome of school spirit.”

Riverview sailed their way to the championship game and despite their loss that afternoon, Riverview students stood proud and applauded the school’s accomplishment.

Winter ball followed Red Cup weekend exactly one week from the opening game. As a student council

member, I can contest that it was quite the rush to get everything together in time.

“My favourite part about winter ball is the dancing, as long as there’s good music being played. I especially love when Cha Cha Slide is played because it’s so much fun,” MacIssac said.

The Cha Cha Slide certainly brought the night together because almost everyone was on the floor doing the dance.

MacIssac is a huge fan of the social aspect that an annual dance has to offer. Whether it’s Spring Fling, like last year, or Winter Ball, like this year, she thinks that the dance is special to the students.

“The most special part of an annual dance, to me at least, is getting to dress up and socialize with so many people that you may not get much opportunity to talk to during school hours or even just in general. It’s an amazing feeling to have a conversation with a friend from Grade 10 for the first time in a while,” MacIssac said.

Balloons were strung, DJ Majestic was in place and Riverview students danced the night away in the midst of silver and blue decorations.

“Winter ball offers a fun night with all of your friends and classmates, as well as multiple places with backgrounds to take cool pictures,” MacIssac said, “Not to mention the music, the multi-colour lights, the dancing, and the canteen is even open for anyone who gets thirsty!”

As a Grade 12 student myself, I agree with MacIssac about the experience that these school events offer. I’ve been extremely lucky to get to experience these events and ones like them throughout my high school experience.
