Glace Bay residents who used the now-closed Bayplex walking track have a new option.

The Glace Bay Y’s Men’s and Women’s Club, which recently purchased the former Morrison school, is opening a walking track in the gymnasium on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

“We’re going to have the gym set up and available for people to come in and use it as a walking track,” said Jeanette MacDonald, club secretary. “The charge will be $1 a person just like it was at the Bayplex.”

The club plans to use the former school for its own events but is also renting office space to businesses.

MacDonald said since the Bayplex closed they have had

“I talked to a couple of people who said they actually have to go to Membertou to use the walking track there. A lot of people don’t want to travel that far just to go to a walking track.”

inquiries about walking at the former school.

The Bayplex closed last summer for renovations which are expected to take up to two years.

MacDonald said the walking track will be open three days a week however if the demand is there, it will be open five days a week.

“They just come in and pay $1 and can walk until their heart’s content. We’re not asking much, the $1 will just go towards the cost of having the lights on in the gym.”

As well she said if people want a change of scenery they can do a lap around the first floor of the building as well as use the gym.

MacDonald added that in the coming weeks a sound system will be installed to provide music and a canteen will be open.

The Y’s Men’s and Women’s Club is also planning a flea market for the end of March. Times and dates have not been finalized but anyone interested in booking a table can contact the club at 902-276-3557.
