Magic put spell on Highlanders
Cape Breton dealt 135-105 loss by visiting Moncton
A 30-point game by Cape Breton’s Malik Story wasn’t enough as the Highlanders suffered a 135-105 loss to the Moncton Magic in National Basketball League of Canada action Thursday at Centre 200.
The loss was the fifth-straight for Cape Breton (11-20) who sit last in the Atlantic Division standings with nine games to go in the regular season. They’re chasing the Island Storm (14-16) for the fourth and final playoff spot, but the Charlottetown club has a game in hand.
Rick Bodiford and Jamal Reynolds off the bench followed with 19 points apiece for Cape Breton. Chris Baswell netted 15 and Tydran Beaty chipped in 13.
The visiting Magic outscored the Highlanders in each quarter and held a 60-54 lead at halftime despite Cape Breton owning a 12point advantage at the seven-minute mark of the second. Moncton was up by as many as 32 in the game.
Magic leading scorer Terry Thomas rained in 30 points for second-place Moncton (2015), while Corey Allmond netted 28. Three players came off the bench and reached double digits: Brent Jennings with 26, Jason Calliste with 13 and Juan Pattillo with 10.
The Highlanders will play their next six games on the road. Next up is a visit to Harbour Station in Saint John to play the thirdplace Riptide (15-13) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
They’re next home game is March 30 when they host the Storm at Centre 200 at 7 p.m.
