Cape Breton rinks drop opening draws at Travelers

A pair of Cape Breton rinks were defeated on the opening day of the Nova Scotia Men’s Travelers Curling Club Championsh­ip at the Sydney Curling Club on Friday.

Schooner Curling Club, skipped by Gordie Cormier and rounded out by third Stephen Leslie, second Thomas Drover and lead Mel Windsor, suffered an 11-1 loss to Mayflower Curling Club of Halifax, led by Mike Callaghan.

Meanwhile, the host rink Sydney Curling Club, led by Kurt Roach, third Mark MacNamara, second Travis Stone and lead Robin Nathanson, fell to CFB Halifax Curling Club, skipped by Tony Moore, 8-2, in front of more than 30 people at the George Street facility.

In other action on Friday, Berwick picked up two wins defeating Chester and Dartmouth with 8-2 scores. Meanwhile, Halifax lost both its games, losing 7-5 to Truro and 10-3 against Chester.

The four-day tournament will continue today with four draws scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Sydney location. Halifax plays Berwick, Truro faces Mayflower, Sydney battles Dartmouth, and Schooner takes on Chester.

Action will also take place on Sunday with draws scheduled for 9 a.m.,

2 p.m. and 7 p.m., if needed. Monday will see games at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., if necessary.

The winner of the tournament will represent the province at the national Travelers Club Curling Championsh­ip from Nov. 1924. The host city for the event has not yet been determined.
