Two non-profit organizations are joining forces to honour mothers.

The Glace Bay Heritage Museum Society and bayitforward are jointly hosting a Mother’s Day tea on May 12 at the museum from 2-4 p.m.

“We will have a very special Mother’s Day jam, every single berry was picked with love by us on our island,” said Elke Irbrahim, vice chair of the museum society and museum curator.

“There will be three berries in it, one is a cranberry but the others will remain a secret.”

Ibrahim said they were approached by the bayitforward organization to work together to put on this fundraiser.

“That’s what local non-profit groups should be doing, working together and supporting each other,” she said. “Fundraisers are quite a bit of work and it makes these things easier for two groups to work to do it together.”

Proceeds from the event will be shared between the two groups.

The event will include lunch and door prizes. The museum’s gift shop will be open and there will be baked goods and books for sale.

“We will have music. We even have an LP player in our courtroom and old LPs and people love them. “

Dave MacKeigan, vice chair of bayitfoward, said their group wants to include the community as much as possible with its events and projects.

“Getting community involvement is very important for everything that we do.”

MacKeigan said the heritage museum did not receive municipal funding this year and this fundraiser will help pay bills. The bayitforward group will use its share of money from the fundraiser for its bandshell project.

“We want to be able to work with everybody in the community and if we can help with each other that’s even better.”
