A steady hiring climate is expected in Cape Breton over the second quarter of 2018, according to the latest ManpowerGroup employment outlook survey.

The survey indicates 20 per cent of employers plan to hire sometime from April to June, while no business surveyed anticipated job cutbacks, said Julianne Ross Brooks of Manpower’s Halifax office.

Another 80 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter.

“With seasonal variations removed from the data, Cape Breton’s second quarter net employment outlook of 12 per cent is on par when compared to the previous quarterly outlook,” Ross Brooks said in a release Tuesday.

“It is also an increase of nine percentage points compared with the outlook reported during the same time last year, indicating a respectable hiring pace for the upcoming months.”

About 1,900 employers across the country were interviewed by ManpowerGroup about their hiring intentions over the next three months. Of the employers surveyed, 74 per cent expect their current staffing levels to remain unchanged and three per cent are unsure about their hiring intentions for the upcoming quarter.

Across Atlantic Canada as a whole, the labour market is expected to be the strongest it has been in more than two years.

Staffing levels are forecast to increase in nine of the 10 industry sectors during the April-June period. Manufacturing — durables sector employers report the strongest hiring prospects with a healthy 23 per cent net increase in the employment outlook.

Nationally, the strongest job prospects are being reported from the public administration sector where nearly three of every 10 employers surveyed said they planned to add to their payrolls during the AprilJune period.

“While Canada experienced a net loss of jobs in January, the employers we surveyed are forecasting varying levels of job gains across all industry sectors, regions and organization-size categories,” Yvonne Tennenbaum, regional director for ManpowerGroup Canada, said in a release.

“Prospects for the upcoming quarter remain strong, led by exceptionally strong growth in Quebec where employers are hiring across multiple sectors.”
