Richmond County planning heavy garbage pickup
Contract to be awarded April 6
The Municipality of the County of Richmond has issued a request for quotes for heavy garbage pickup.
The 50-page request for quotes is posted to the provincial government’s procurement website.
The deadline to submit questions is March 23, while the request closes March 30. The contract is due to be awarded on April 6, with work to take place between May 7 and June 1.
The initial contract is for five weeks, but the municipality reserves the right to extend the term to include a fall collection, if one is to take place, with the written agreement of both parties.
The tender notes that the municipality may award the contract to multiple bidders.
Multiple visits to the same street should be minimized and the contractor should try to avoid visiting the same area on more than one day. All materials may be collected together but are to be sorted immediately after arriving at the Richmond solid waste management facility.
Heavy garbage collection is to be provided to all roads currently receiving regular curbside collection service. The tender packages includes maps of the three zones — Isle Madame, St. Peter’s Canal west to Point Tupper, and areas east of St. Peter’s Canal.
In spring 2017, 53 tonnes were collected in Isle Madame, compared to 62 tonnes a year earlier; 153 tonnes was collected in St. Peter’s Canal west to Point Tupper, compared to 180 tonnes in 2016; and 124 tonnes was collected in areas east of St. Peter’s Canal last year, compared to 119 tonnes in 2016.
Among the items accepted are barbecues with propane tanks removed, snow blowers, bicycles, furniture, box springs and mattresses, appliances, hot water heaters, residential renovation and construction material.
The CBRM has also approved a heavy garbage pickup as part of its recent budget discussions, although details haven’t yet been disclosed.
