Easter bunny will be on hand to welcome residents

Four local groups are once again joining forces — with support from the Cape Breton Regional Municipality — to provide a free breakfast and meet the Easter bunny.

“It’s absolutely free, doesn’t cost a nickel for anyone to come there,” said John Stefura, president of the Dominion Hawks Club.

The breakfast is being held Saturday, March 31 at the Dominion fire hall from 9-11 a.m. At 11 a.m., Easter treats will be handed out to the children and photos will be taken with the Easter bunny.

Stefura said the original idea for the free breakfast came from the volunteer firefighters and club members.

“We were wondering what we could do for the kids over Easter weekend. The firemen do a bang-up job with their breakfast over Seaside Daze so we decided we would do that, have the Easter bunny there and pass out treats to all the kids and so on.

“The groups involved — the Hawks Club, the fire department, the Shamrock Club, the Sandbar – we all get together and prepare the breakfast and serve. We all chip in. Everyone has a part to play.”

There is no admission but

everyone is asked to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item for one of the local food banks.

Tickets are sold on an Easter basket and the profits go towards the Easter breakfast the following year.

Charlotte MacDonald, with CBRM recreation, said the event has been going on for some 10 years.

“These four groups put the ‘unity’ in community,” she said. “It’s always great to see these four community minded organizations getting together to do something like this.”

MacDonald said the CBRM helps promote and support the event.

Last year she said several hundred attended including more than 80 children along with parents and guardians.

The municipality provides the Easter treats and the photo booth.
