It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmothe­r, great-grandmothe­r and friend, Alma MacLeod, age 98, on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in North Sydney on May 24, 1919, Alma was the daughter of the late Ernest and Annie (Miller) Russell.

Alma was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church for many years. She was a talented knitter and seamstress and at one-time taught sewing at night school. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Alma is survived by her three sons, Malcolm (Marjorie), Hamilton, Paul (Darlene), Sydney Mines and Anthony (Arlene), Burlington; several grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren; nieces and nephews.

She was predecease­d by her husband, Alexander MacLeod; her son, John William “Billy” MacLeod, her daughter, Mary MacLeod; her brothers, Tobias & Eric Russell; sisters, Eileen Burke and Marina MacDonald.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Northside Guest Home for the care and compassion shown to our mother during her stay there.

Visitation for Alma will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiatin­g. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
