A fundraising campaign has been started to help a 23-yearold woman who was seriously injured in a car accident Saturday morning.

Shanna MacDonald, a single mother with a young daughter, was airlifted to the QEII hospital in Halifax after a two-vehicle accident near the Sydney Memorial Chapel on Welton Street.

Many family members have gone to the hospital to be by MacDonald’s side while she underwent surgery on Monday.

According to the GoFundMe campaign, doctors have told the family MacDonald may need brain surgery if swelling occurs within three days of the accident. So far there has been no swelling in her brain.

Because of injuries to her main artery and internal carotid, MacDonald suffered a stroke. She also suffered many other injuries and could face a lengthy recovery.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 50-year-old man, was sent to Cape Breton Regional Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. The GoFundMe campaign, which can be accessed at https://www. gofundme.com/shanna-macdonald-amp-family, was started to help the family cover medical and travel expenses and the original goal to raise $5,000 was surpassed in the first 19 hours.

As of publication time, $6,860 had been raised.
