GILLIS, Ambrose Lawrence

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Ambrose, aged 79, on March 21, 2018 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottet­own. Born in North Sydney, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Joseph Gillis and Lucy (MacNeil) Gillis.

Ambrose was a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, enlisting at the age of 22 and serving during the years 1960 to 1972. He was trained as a Teletype and Crypto Operator and was stationed in Halifax, NS, Petawawa and Borden, ON as well as overseas in Soest, Germany from 1966 to 1969. Ambrose reached the rank of Sergeant and following his military career, continued to use his communicat­ions skills as a Radio Communicat­or with the Canadian Coast Guard employed at stations in Ketch Harbour and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia until his retirement in 1997.

Ambrose is survived by two daughters, Valerie Gillis, Halifax, NS and Kimberley (Michael) Proulx, Charlottet­own, PE; grandchild­ren, Danielle and Benjamin, Charlottet­own, PE; two sisters, Jenny (Ches) Liska, North West Arm, NS and Sophie Gakis, Calgary, AB, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predecease­d by his brothers, James Bertrand Gillis and Joseph C. Gillis, both of Boisdale, NS; infant twin brothers, Archibald and Michael, and his sisters, Mary MacSween, Beaver Cove, NS and Sr. Margaret CSM, Antigonish, NS.

As his heart was always back home, a celebratio­n of life and private interment to be held in Cape Breton at a later date.
