DEVOE, Gertrude Elizabeth

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom Gertie Devoe, 94, of Howie Center, formerly from Florence.

She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Irene (Jessome) Theriault of Sydney Mines. Born March 11, 1924 in Sydney Mines, Gertie was a wonderful and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on March 26, 2018 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.

Our mother had a youthful spirit, a great sense of humour, a passion for cooking, music and step-dancing, a deep love and devotion to our family, and an unwavering faith in God. She sang in the church choir at St. Stephen’s Parish for many years. Mom loved to travel and enjoyed many trips with us to the Shrine at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec. She has given us guidance, support, tremendous love, and lots of cherished memories. She looked forward to, and thoroughly enjoyed, our many family gatherings.

She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Hanrahan and Wanda (Scott) Stevenson; sons, Kelly (Kelly Irene), Billy (Jackie) and Blair (Tracey); granddaughters, Danielle and Leah; grandsons, Michael, Ryan, Shawn, Devin, Mitchell, Dylan and great-grandsons, Jaxx and Clark.

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Bill; daughter, Ester; son-in-law, Gary Hanrahan; sister, Theresa Gillis and brothers, Wilfred, Louie, Phonse and David.

As per her wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place with burial to be held at a later date. The family is very grateful for the care she received from Dr. John Archibald, the staff of the VON and Emergency Health Services, as well as the staff of Ambulatory Care/Wound Clinic, ER, 4C and Palliative Care at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
