Annual McKeough Music Award fundraiser set for today in North Sydney
Teams hit the ice today for annual McKeough Music Award fundraiser.
The sixth annual McKeough Music Award fundraiser will take place on the Northside today.
The event, in memory of Dave and Donna McKeough, who died in a traffic accident in 2012, will be held at the Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney, starting at 4 p.m., with the Northside Vics playing the Cape Breton Lakewind Crusaders, a team Dave once played for.
The fundraiser will feature three hockey games and six teams. The money raised from the event will go to the scholarship fund at Memorial High School in Sydney Mines.
Dave McKeough was the lead guitarist with the Blues Merchants and featured prominently on many albums Fred Lavery produced at Lakewind Sound Studios.
He toured nationally with notable musicians including Bruce Guthro, Gordie Sampson, Jimmy Rankin, Natalie MacMaster, Rita MacNeil and Matt Minglewood.
McKeough also taught music in schools and gave private lessons. He was presented with the Musician’s Achievement Award during the East Coast Music Awards in Sydney in 2010.
Both the McKeoughs were known and involved in their community. Both played hockey in their community, both wearing the No. 12.
Following the opening contest of the tournament, a game will be held at 5 p.m. in memory of Nathan Doyle, a relative of Donna McKeough who died in December 2016.
Meanwhile, at 6 p.m., the Northside Hurricanes will play the Misconducts, a team Donna McKeough played for.
After the completion of the onice action, entertainment will be held upstairs at the Emera Centre, starting at 7 p.m.
To date, the fundraiser has raised close to $13,000. Donations will be accepted at the door as admission for both the components of the event.
