-

Sydney

The family of Mora Rose Hawley announces her peaceful passing on April 5, 2018 at the An Cala Palliative Care Centre surrounded by family. Born in Sydney on June 28, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Murdock MacKinnon and Margaret (MacIntyre).

Mora is survived by six children including, Christopher Hawley, Toronto, Murdock Hawley, Sydney, Cheryl Joseph (Richard), Sydney, Dolores Sampson (Clifford), Kenny Hawley, Vancouver and Carolyn Hawley, Sydney. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of over 70 years, Kenneth Hawley. as well as daughter, Mary Elaine Campbell (Daniel), and son, William James in infancy. She was predeceased by her brothers, Jerome MacKinnon (Margaret), James MacKinnon, Hector MacKinnon (Ena), John MacKinnon, and sister, Jessie MacKinnon.

Mom was proud to have graduated from Holy Angels and remained friends with many classmates throughout her life. She was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish, enjoyed singing in the choir and received the Catholic Women League’s fifty year commemoration plaque in 2014. Mora also devoted more than thirty years to the Canadian Girl Guides, first as a guide leader at Sacred Heart Parish and later as the Deputy Commissioner of the Girl Guide Council for Nova Scotia. She helped organize the 1977 International Girl Guide Camp in Margaree and some of her fondest memories were of the guides she met that summer from over fifty countries.

Mom was a caring and compassionate woman who taught us to think of others, to be kind to animals and to embrace opportunities to help others. Although she struggled with Alzheimer’s disease in her last ten years, she remained cheerful and positive. prayed the rosary daily and kept a deep faith. Her illness was brightened by visits from friends and relatives.

Mora’s family would like to thank her New Dawn homecare workers, Donna Vature and Donna Fraser for their wonderful care as well as her nieces Margie MacDougall and Colleen Hawrylak for bringing so much cheer to the house during her illness. We would also like to thank the nurses and caregivers at the An Cala Palliative Care Center for such compassionate care in Mom’s final days.

Visitation will take place Monday, April 9, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Marguerite Bourgeoys with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, at a later date.
