Bail hearing set for Halifax woman in disturbance case

-

SYDNEY — A bail hearing is set for today for a Halifax woman whose actions inside a Sydney retail store resulted in an evacuation of the store.

Karin Tara Sorenson, 47, of Gottingen Street made a brief provincial court appearance Tuesday but her bail hearing was adjourned until Wednesday.

She was arrested on two occasions last week in Cape Breton.

She was arrested April 5 after Cape Breton Regional Police received several reports of a woman wandering in and out of traffic on Highway 105 in Groves Point. She was released on conditions on Friday that included she return to Halifax.

However, after being released, Sorenson was again back in police custody after she is alleged to have armed herself with a knife and crawled into a shelving unit at Home Depot which sparked an evacuation of the store.

She is now facing additional charges that include two counts of breaching courts orders — failing to keep the peace and failing to return to Halifax — and single counts of causing a disturbance by causing an evacuation and carrying a weapon dangerous to public peace (a knife).

She was arrested late last year in Halifax after complaints about a woman wandering in and out of traffic. She signed a peace bond that included the condition she not create a safety hazard on roadways.
